Long noncoding RNAs: functional surprises from the RNA world.
Most of the eukaryotic genome is transcribed, yielding a complex network of transcripts that includes tens of thousands of long noncoding RNAs with little or no protein-coding capacity. Although the vast majority of long noncoding RNAs have yet to be characterized thoroughly, many of these transcripts are unlikely to represent transcriptional "noise" as a significant number have been shown to e...
متن کاملAssociation between Long Noncoding RNA ANRIL Expression Variants and Susceptibility to Coronary Artery Disease
Animal cells possess thousands of long non-coding (lnc) RNAs, such as antisense noncoding RNA in the INK4 locus (ANRIL) , which have regulatory roles in the cells’ molecular mechanisms, including X-chromosome inactivation, and developmental processes. These lnc RNAs are known to influence the extensive spectrum of age-related disorders. Accordingly, there is evidence for the role of...
متن کاملRNA Regulation of Lipotoxicity and Metabolic Stress
Noncoding RNAs are an emerging class of nonpeptide regulators of metabolism. Metabolic diseases and the altered metabolic environment induce marked changes in levels of microRNAs and long noncoding RNAs. Furthermore, recent studies indicate that a growing number of microRNAs and long noncoding RNAs serve as critical mediators of adaptive and maladaptive responses through their effects on gene e...
متن کاملLong Noncoding RNAs in Metabolic Syndrome Related Disorders
Ribonucleic acids (RNAs) are very complex and their all functions have yet to be fully clarified. Noncoding genes (noncoding RNA, sequences, and pseudogenes) comprise 67% of all genes and they are represented by housekeeping noncoding RNAs (transfer RNA (tRNA), ribosomal RNA (rRNA), small nuclear RNA (snRNA), and small nucleolar RNA (snoRNA)) that are engaged in basic cellular processes and by ...
متن کاملFunctions of long noncoding RNAs in the nucleus.
Nucleus is the residence and place of work for a plethora of long noncoding RNAs. Here, we provide a summary of the functions and functional mechanisms of several relatively well studied examples of nuclear long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the nucleus, such as Xist, NEAT1, MALAT1 and TERRA. The recently identified novel EIciRNA is also highlighted. These nuclear lncRNAs play a variety of roles ...
